My theme got ripped off

September 2, 2011

Maybe I should take it as a sign of success, but I’m a little too upset to be happy about that right now. While searching for a WordPress theme for a client I came across this one called “cssfever”. It looked quite familiar.

Now where have I seen this before? Oh, that’s right, my Simple Things theme looks almost exactly like this.

Sure, you can take inspiration from somewhere else, but this is basically the same thing, except bastardized a bit. For example, the “search” and “RSS” buttons in the header look awful, and the left edges of the flag are jagged (because there are no images used, just CSS – which breaks the design in Internet Explorer).

Honestly, it wouldn’t have been a big deal if this person would have asked me for permission to port over the theme to WordPress. Someone actually did ask me if he could do just that and I didn’t hesitate to say yes. He’s kept me updated on his progress as well as keeping attribution in the files. I love sharing things with the online community.

If you’d like to see the preview of cssfever, check it out here. If you’d like to see or use the original on Tumblr, you can do that here.
